On Saturday, July 27, the Hastings-on-Hudson Fire Department responded to a 911 call for a structure fire at 87 Main Street. The first engine was on scene within two minutes of the alarm and all HFD apparatus responded to the scene. Assistant Chief Brian Schnibbe assumed command and directed fire operations with Assistant Chief Mike Gunther directing interior operations. Smoke was showing from the roof and the fire was discovered inside of the wall and in the attic (cock loft) above the second floor office area. A request for mutual aid (10-75) was transmitted and resources from the surrounding villages responded to assist. Several hose lines were stretched to attack the fire and members pulled a section of the ceiling enabling access to the fire in the attic. The buildings sprinkler system had activated and helped delay the spread of the fire.

The speed of the response along with a swift, coordinated interior and exterior attack enabled the fire to be extinguished quickly with minimal property damage. It appears that the fire began when contractors used a torch on the roof. Two Hastings firefighters sustained minor injuries fighting the fire and were treated by the HFD Ambulance Crews and transported to a local Emergency Room. Mayor Armacost and the Village Trusties sent their thanks and wished the injured members a speedy recovery. The Hastings-on-Hudson Fire Department would like to thank the following departments and utilities for their assistance:

Ardsley Fire Department
Irvington Fire Department
Tarrytown Fire Department
Elmsford Fire Department
