On August 4th During Tropical Storm Isaias the Hastings Fire Department handled 19 Emergency call during the storm most of the calls were for wires downed by trees that were arcing and two structure fires at the same time.while received other calls during the same time frame. With the assistance of our neighboring volunteer fire departments all calls were met with a quick response.
The Fire department was not immune to the hazards of falling trees one of our fire engines sustained damage when a tree limb fell on it while responding to an emergency call no firefighters were injured.
The Hastings-on-Fire Department received a call for a fire at the train station building on Southside Avenue while responding to another call. All HFD apparatus were diverted to Southside Ave while an Assistant Fire Chief handled the original call. Upon arrival responding units found an air conditioner unit on the roof on fire, with fire extending to the building. Hose lines were deployed and began fighting the fire from the ground while ladders were deployed to access the roof. Mutual aid was requested from our neighboring departments for assistance. Once the ladders were in place firefighters from HFD accessed the roof with a hand line (hose) and quickly knocked down the fire. Other firefighters checked the inside of the cafe for fire extension and found no extension. While the units were operating at this incident two other calls were received one of them was for another structure fire. A combination of Hastings and mutual aid units from our neighboring departments responded and handled the calls. The quick response of the Fire department kept the damage to both locations to a minimum.
Hastings Fire Department would like to thank the fire departments from the surrounding area for their assistance.
