On Thursday, May 25, more than 30 members of the Hastings-on-Hudson Fire Department took part in a classroom drill on the operation of gas meters. All apparatus in the department carry two kinds of gas meters: a 4-gas Ventis meter and a Sensit combustible gas meter.

Steve Rossi from AAA Emergency Supply went over the operation of both kinds of meters with members, including how to reset the meters for proper operation. The danger levels of each gas detected {combustible gas (LEL), carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide and oxygen} were also reviewed.

In recent years, the fire department has seen an increase in calls related to gas leaks as infrastructure ages and more homes have natural gas alarms installed. This drill was an important refresher for members, who are usually first on scene before Con Edison.

As a reminder, if your carbon monoxide alarm or natural gas alarm starts sounding, call 911 and leave your home immediately!
