On Monday, September 23rd, the Hastings-on-Hudson Fire Department held its monthly department drill in a vacant commercial building that the owners graciously allowed us to train on. The drill was aimed at sharpening our department's skills on some specific tasks. The building was filled with fake smoke (a water-based fog) simulating smoke conditions and drastically limiting visibility. Members trained on searching for victims and downed firefighters under zero visibility conditions. They used search patterns, thermal imaging cameras and their hands to feel for victims. The proper use of SCBA (Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus) and air conservation was practiced and ladder and roof operations were conducted. This is our department's continued emphasis on training.
