| Thirteen members of the Hastings on Hudson Fire Department are now Certified Ice Rescue Technicians, after completing a course in Massachusetts on 2/7/15.
The members put on ice rescue suits and spent a day on a frozen pond, hoisting themselves in and out of the frigid water through a hole cut in the ice. They used ropes, ring buoys, slings, backboards and various sleds and boats to learn how to make rescues using any available equipment.
The bottom line: If authorities haven’t declared the ice safe—don’t go on it! Members learned in the class, conducted by Lifesaving Resources, that 85% of ice rescue incidents occur because people go out on the ice to rescue pets. If a loved one or the family dog falls through the ice—call 911. The Hastings Fire Department is prepared to help.
